Prejudice

At Lee's birthday party this past Saturday night, Javan asked me what has been the most interesting thing about having pink highlights. I thought about it for a moment and had to tell him that confronting my own pre-concieved notions and stereotypes about people with "odd" hair has been eye opening. I never realized how negatively I thought about not-so-proper looking people until I feared what other kids would think of me with my hair. When I hung out with my ultra-abercrombie and fitch friend yesterday, I almost blurted out that I wasn't going "punk" or anything, haha. If that doesn't prove how much a I connect unnatural hair color with people on the edge of the social sphere, I don't know what does.
I guess I have always found people who are radical (another assumption) enough to dye their hair to be very intimidating because of what I think they know (which would be more than me).
I find a lot of identity in my hair, does anyone else?

Ahmi--

I identify with my hair only so much as I believe its a part of me. And, as any part of me, the way I choose to make it is going to reflect my taste through my decisions. You associate hair color dyed kids with edge of the 'social sphere,' but, doll, which social sphere are you thinking about?

On yours, maybe they're out to the edges, but that's not everyone's right? I mean, hey, I've been dying my hair since the fifth grade, and had radical colors for my entire middle school career. Blues, pinks, blacks, reds, greens, I had my fun. My hair was just that to me though, it was my fun. So, I'm not too sure on the identifying myself to it.

You're social sphere intrigues me from what I read though. Hair has never been that important to me (Hell, I've shearn mine off short not just because it looks good that way, but because its easier to deal with), so hearing about the reactions never fails to surprise me. Maybe it's just not a big deal to me because of the kinds of people I know?

Anyway, can't wait to hear more. Your hair experiment blog amazes me.
